The official language onboard our ships is English. All candidates must demonstrate a good command of the English language prior to embarking the ship. It is mandatory for all new crew, staff and officers to complete and pass the Marlins English Language test when joining. English should always be spoken in the presence of guests – even when conversing with another crew member.
The areas available for leisure time activities are limited onboard a river ship, it is up to crew members to come up with ideas how to entertain themselves onboard.
Crew Mess: Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served in the Crew Mess for all ratings. Crew mess is also used for evening entertainment, like films and games.
Crew Laundry: To wash your personal clothes, there is Crew Laundry, self-service washing and drying machines at your disposal for free. Your uniform is taken care of by your colleagues in the Laundry Department.
Crew Sun Deck/ Gym: Crew sun deck is located on the top deck next to Vista deck. Crew have Gym access to Guest Gym onboard during certain hours.
Internet: Free Wi-fi access.
Living Arrangements: Depending on your position onboard, you will share a cabin with a fellow crew member. All crew cabins have telephone and television. Most cabins have shared bathroom with the next-door cabin. Limited free space and living together with a fellow crew member may be a new and different experience. Keeping your cabin clean, orderly and in good condition is everyone’s responsibility.
The uniform is provided by the company and will be handed out onboard. Shoes need to be purchased before joining.
SIGNING ON THE SHIP
Immediately upon boarding the ship, you will meet the Front Office Manager. You will hand in your passport, medical papers and employment agreement. You will then receive a crew card, which is your identification and must be carried with you at all times when going ashore and boarding the ship. A “Buddy” (a member of your department) will greet you and assist you in picking up your uniform, show your cabin as well as the emergency exits. Your Buddy will also help you familiarize with the ship prior to sailing.
A river season starts approximately in March/April and ends in December/January. Depending on your position sailing periods are between 12 – 15 weeks onboard followed by 4 weeks vacation. This is based on an established vacation plan worked out by our personnel consultants. You will also receive salary when you are home on vacation. Between the season contracts you do not get paid. Provided you follow this vacation plan, you will also know well in advance when you can make your travel arrangements back home and return.
Nautical and Technical crew and officers
A river season starts approximately in March/April and ends in December/January. Depending on your position sailing periods are between 4 weeks onboard followed by 2 – 4 weeks vacation. You will be paid 12 months a year. This is based on an established vacation plan worked out by our personnel consultants. Provided you follow this vacation plan, you will also know well in advance when you can make your travel arrangements back home and return.
You receive monthly wages in Euros. Each crew member will receive, free of charge, an Ocean Pay Visa debit card. You will receive your pay via direct deposit (free of charge) in your Ocean Pay card account each month while you’re working on board and while on vacation. You can transfer the money from your Ocean Pay account to any bank account worldwide, make purchases or pay bills, or just leave the money in the Ocean Pay account.
When joining one of our ships, it is mandatory that you attend a safety meeting. This applies for both new, returning and newly promoted crew members. As a crew member on board, you will be given a job description for your normal duties. In addition to this, all crew members have a duty to perform in event of an emergency. In order to prepare for a hazardous situation, all crew must attend various emergency drills and special training.
When docked in port, we require a certain number of crew members remaining onboard. Certain positions are permanently assigned due to safety and firefighting expertise. Other positions are chosen to stay onboard by the department heads.
DRUG & ALCOHOL POLICY
It is the policy of Crystal Cruises that our ships be operated safely and with maximum concern for the environment. To this end, the use, sale or possession of illegal drugs; the misuse of legal drugs; and the immoderate or unauthorized use of alcohol are specifically forbidden on board company ships. Accordingly, Crystal Cruises will not employ persons known to use drugs.
Crystal Cruises has certain restrictions in place onboard the ships for smoking and e-cigarettes.
